Adoption
Adoption is a deep personal decision for a caring adult, with life long results for the child.
When we meet, we will discuss:
- The nature of adoption compared with guardianship or custody
- Whether you may adopt this child
- Who must consent to the adoption
- Court procedure required for adoption
- Expected cost of the adoption
- Expected time required for adoption
- The legal result of adoption
There is no charge for this first meeting.
Our attorneys and staff will:
- Prepare all forms for your signature and for filing with the Court
- Arrange other matters as needed, e.g. newspaper publication when a party’s address is not known
- Arrange all scheduling with the Court
You will need to:
- Open your home to a Court-appointed home visitor
- Submit to background check and fingerprinting
- Appear (usually just once) at the Court
